Peoples Health History

Peoples Health is a Medicare Advantage organization. Established in 1994, Peoples Health was founded by medical providers and guided by physicians. Our primary focus is providing coverage to people with Medicare.

The choice of 85,000+ people with Medicare in Louisiana.

Our Mission Statement

To provide high quality, cost-effective healthcare services to the members we serve.

Our Background and Beliefs

In 1997, in the formative years of Medicare Advantage (at the time called “Medicare + Choice”), Peoples Health launched a “demonstration project” to help Medicare test the Medicare Advantage concept. That pioneering project — that health plan — is now one of Louisiana’s largest Medicare Advantage plans. It’s a true homegrown success story.

For us, success is built on many things and measured in many ways. It’s built on prevention and early detection. It’s built on easy access to care and face-to-face, personal attention. It’s built on providing free health education and fitness classes in communities we serve. But the best measure of success is when we are able to help any of our members reach their own health goals.

We want you to be as healthy as you can be.

To deliver on that goal, we use a team approach. That’s why we say Peoples Health is Your Medicare Health Team.

Your Medicare Health Team

In over 20 years of serving people with Medicare, we’ve seen how health issues — sometimes very complicated health issues — can surface quite unexpectedly. We’ve also learned that, for complicated health issues, what works is teamwork.

Our plan members are backed by a Medicare health team made up of local healthcare professionals to assist and help coordinate care. From simple reminders about annual screenings to more complex care coordination, we work with our plan members to help them enjoy the best health possible.

Our regional teams include physicians and pharmacists, nurse practitioners, social workers and other healthcare professionals — all available to meet face-to-face with our plan members when and where needed.

One of the places members can meet with their health team is at our regional service centers. These community-based centers provide a range of services from wellness assessments to educational presentations.

Medicare Star Rating

Medicare developed its Star Rating system to give people with Medicare an objective measure of a plan’s performance. The rating system gives people a way to consider quality as well as cost as they make their enrollment decisions. Medicare evaluates plans every year and scores them on a scale of 1 to 5 Stars, with 5 Stars indicating the highest performance.

Peoples Health’s 4.5-Star rating is an overall rating – a combination of the two broad categories of health plan and drug plan quality.

Under those two broad categories are measures that consider a range of issues such as:

  • Customer service
  • Helping members stay healthy and improving their health
  • Managing chronic conditions
  • Drug safety and appropriate use
  • Disenrollments
  • Member experience with the plan

Much of the information is based on data such as member records and claims information, but understanding member experience can’t be found in data alone. For that score, Medicare goes straight to the source: they survey actual plan members.

Medicare started rating Medicare Advantage plans in 2008, and Peoples Health has always scored high. For the last eight years, we earned a rating of 4 Stars or higher out of 5. Peoples Health is the only Medicare Advantage organization in Louisiana to achieve the highest rating in the state for three years running.
